P.E. & Health through the gradesGreetings from the elementary physical education and health staff of the Wilmington Public Schools! We hope that you had a happy and healthy summer.
We wanted to take this opportunity to explain to you a little bit about the physical education and health classes that your child will be involved in this year. Boutwell & Wildwood Schools (Mrs. Bishop): Physical Education: 2x week-30 minute classes per week. Shawsheen & Woburn Street Schools: Physical Education (Miss Hendee/Mrs. Stinson) 1x 45 minute class per week. Shawshween & Woburn Street Schools: Health (Mr. Hakim/Mr. Maxson): Grades 1-3, 1x 45 minute class per week. West & North Schools: Physical Education/Health (Mrs. Livermore/Mrs. Quigley) 1x 45 minute class per week. Health (grade 4): 1x week -45 minute class. KindergartenThis month we will provide your child with experiences that will help them to develop a competency in physical skills. We will be concentrating on locomotor skills in particular, (running, walking, skipping, galloping and hopping). We will learn several cooperative games, and a variety of ways to balance, jump and land using jump rope and hula-hoops. Please ask your child to show you how they can skip, jump rope, hula-hoop and move in a variety ways listed above.

Tips to Get Your Family Active:

1st & 2nd GradeChildren are continuing to develop locomotor and non-locomotor skills in class. We are using the concept of movement at different levels, speed and directions and applying them in a variety of tag games. Students will begin to use a variety of equipment including hula-hoops, jump ropes and balls. Get ready to play some Halloween games!
3rd GradeThe Presidential Youth Fitness Program will be given to all students in the school system beginning in grade 3. The test consists of 5 components of fitness:
1. Abdominal strength, (curl up test). 2. Upper body strength, (Pull up/Bent arm Hang). 3. Endurance, (½ mile walk/run or pacer). 4. Flexibility, (sit and reach). 5. Trunk lift 4th & 5th GradeAs a new year begins at the West and North Intermediate Schools, we have begun our year off with the Presidential Youth Fitness Program. These challenges consist of six activities, which measure the student’s abdominal strength, agility, flexibility, upper body strength and endurance. Children are encouraged to do their own personal best!!! At the conclusion of our testing, soccer and basketball skills will be introduced. These lead up skills will allow the students to participate in inter-classroom games. This will help the student build confidence, self-esteem, teamwork and sportsmanship.
We are looking forward to teaching your students and allowing them the opportunity to feel successful and confident while having fun learning!! 1st, 2nd, & 3rd Grade Health ClassIn the fall, students in health class will have an opportunity to explore the many feelings they experience on a day-to-day basis. The students will investigate positive ways to manage their own feelings as well as the skills needed to understand and consider the emotions of others. The children will participate in a unit on friendship where they will learn to communicate and relate to others within their family, school, and the community. The fall season will conclude with important lessons on violence prevention with a focus on anti-bullying. Students will become familiar with various types of bullying, peaceful ways of dealing with bullying, and necessary bystander skills.
4th Grade Health ClassIn the health room at the North and the West Intermediate, the topic of discussion is total body fitness. Children are learning that without total body fitness, wellness cannot be achieved. Total body fitness consists of three components.
1. PHYSICAL- getting enough sleep, proper nutrition and the importance of exercise. 2. MENTAL / EMOTIONAL- how we feel, how we deal with our peers and certain situations, the importance of self-esteem. 3. FAMILY/ SOCIAL- how we get along, friendships, extra-curricular activities. This leads to character building, feeling proud of the person you are and that we are all unique! |
